In June 2020, NCALL will hold its biennial elections according to our Terms of Reference. We are looking for volunteers to run for the following positions: President(s) Treasurer Secretary Any of the existing NCALL Executive would be happy to discuss their current role and the responsibilities. Next NCALL Meeting: March 5th, 2020 Topic: All NCALL members are invited to participate in a round table discussion on the topic of handling difficult client situations. Members are invited to share: Current or past challenges with difficult client interactions. This may include: General types of difficult interactions Anonymized anecdotes, etc. Summaries of training taken to help staff navigate difficult situations Any actions or policy changes that followed such incidents NB: This round table discussion will be confidential. Speaker: Kimberly Girling, Research and Policy Director, Evidence for Democracy Topic: Evidence for Democracy recently published a report titled Evidence in Action: An Analysis of Information Gathering and Use by Canadian Parliamentarians. Kimberly will speak to the findings of the report, which have interesting implications for the Library of Parliament and federal libraries. January 2019 NCALL Meeting: Cannabis Legalization in Canada

Date & Time: Thursday, January 17, 2019; 12:00 to 1:30pm Speaker: William Bjornsson, Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP Topic: Cannabis Legalization in Canada Location: Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP Description: Many Canadian law firms have created interdisciplinary cannabis practice groups to prepare for the legalization of recreational cannabis last fall. That legal change involves complex issues related to corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, tax, real estate, advertising, health, food law, criminal enforcement and employment and labour law. At our meeting, Mr. Bjornsson will explain how a firm such as his decided to create a new group, the kinds of information gathering and legal research that go into the work, the work load, what difficulties a firm might face in getting everyone from so many different areas of law to work together well in an entirely new legal environment etc. He will also discuss issues that have arisen since legalization. There will be a brief business meeting to start.
